Cash Counting Machines in Pakistan: How Fake Note Detection Works & Which One to Buy (2026 Guide)
If your business handles a lot of cash, whether it is a wholesale market, a petrol pump, a mart, a school fee counter or an exchange company, you already know the end-of-day pain: counting bundles twice, mismatches, and the occasional fake Rs 1,000 or Rs 5,000 note that nobody noticed.
Banks solved this years ago. The State Bank of Pakistan first told banks in 2007 to install fake-note detection machines at their main branches, free for the public to use. Under its 2015 currency management strategy it asked banks to automate cash processing and issue only machine-authenticated notes through branches and ATMs. The same technology is now affordable for any counter.
How fake note detection works
Better machines use several sensors at once, because a good fake can pass one test but rarely passes all of them:
- UV (ultraviolet): genuine banknote paper does not glow under UV, while ordinary bleached paper does. This catches most photocopied and printed fakes.
- MG (magnetic): it detects the magnetic ink and security thread used in genuine notes.
- IR (infrared): it checks ink patterns that are only visible in infrared and measures paper density.
- DD / size detection: it flags notes of the wrong size, half notes and two notes stuck together.
- CIS image sensor: found on higher-end machines, it reads the actual denomination, so the machine can total the value of a mixed bundle.
When a sensor flags a note, the machine stops and beeps so you can pull it out. One honest caveat: a machine is a strong first filter, not a guarantee. Still check any doubtful note by hand for the watermark, the security thread and the feel of the paper.
Types of cash counting machines
1. Basic counters
These count notes quickly and add up batches. They are fine where fake notes are rare. The Speed-X SP-610 is a reliable entry model.
2. Counters with fake note detection
The best value for most shops. The Speed-X SP-620 adds fake note detection to the SP-610 for a small price difference. The Speed-X 2100-UV is a popular counter for wholesale and retail counters, with UV fake note detection. The Speed-X 5800D is another everyday choice.
3. Value counters and multi-currency machines
These read each note's denomination and give you the total value of a mixed bundle, not just the count. Exchange companies and travel agents can count foreign currency too. Options include the Ontech 7000 multi-currency, the Speed-X SP-CM810, the Black Copper BC-PKNC7 and the Ontech 6000B. The Ontech 6000B has a battery backup, so counting does not stop during load-shedding.
4. Double-pocket sorters (bank grade)
Bank branches and cash-in-transit companies need machines that separate rejected notes into a second pocket without stopping. Some also sort by denomination and face. The Speed-X SP-950A double pocket is built for this workload.
5. Cash binding
After counting, the Speed-X 20 mm automatic cash binder straps bundles neatly, which is handy for banks, schools collecting fees, and wholesale markets.
Which one should you buy?
- Small shop or pharmacy: Speed-X SP-620 or 2100-UV.
- Wholesale market or petrol pump: a fake-detect counter, or a value counter if bundles are mixed.
- Exchange company or travel agent: a multi-currency value counter (Ontech 7000, SP-CM810).
- Areas with long power cuts: Ontech 6000B with battery backup.
- Bank branch or cash centre: double-pocket SP-950A.
Care tips
- Clean the sensors and rollers with a soft brush weekly. Dust causes false alarms.
- Straighten folded or very old notes before counting.
- Don't overfill the hopper. Follow the capacity in the manual.
- Keep it on a stable surface away from fans blowing across the notes.
Frequently asked questions
Can a cash counting machine detect fake Pakistani notes?
Machines with UV, MG and IR sensors catch the large majority of fakes, especially printed and photocopied notes. For complete safety, check any flagged or doubtful note manually.
What is the difference between count and value counting?
A basic counter tells you how many notes there are. A value counter reads each denomination and tells you how much money there is in a mixed bundle.
